Germany was in 2nd place in the fifa world rankings before winning the world cup in 2014 and rising to 1st place. Germany's national team started in Group G and won their games against the USA and Portugal while tying Ghana. They proceeded to beat Algeria 2-1 and France 0-1. In the semi-finals they won their second hightest win in history against the host team of Brazil. Even though a close game was expected Germany won the game 1-7. In the finals against Argentina Mario Goetze scored the winning goal for Germany in the 113. minute of overtime.
